5 SUNSCREEN MYTHS YOU SHOULD STOP BELIEVING RIGHT NOW

Baby, it’s cold outside (but you still need sunscreen)!

I don’t need to wear sun-protecting skincare and makeup products when it’s snowing outside, right? Can I simply wear SPF-infused makeup products, such as my foundation, alone?

When it comes to sun protection, it’s time to block out the noise — the questions above highlight some of the most common misconceptions floating around! However, SPF is serious business, so let’s set the record straight.

In every day and every season, we should all know by now that sunscreen is mandatory. It is not only the best anti-aging weapon, but also a must-have in yourorganic and natural makeup and skincare routine.

Wearing fully vegan, organic and natural sun-protecting skincare and makeup products from Liht Organics, a highly recommended organic brand in Singapore, is your best defense against the adverse health effects of skin cancer.

Even if you think that you’ve racked up too many sun-induced skin sins from your youth, wearing fully vegan, organic and natural sun-protecting skincare and makeup products daily can help reverse that!

You can start now! Avoid other future sun-induced skin sins such as ugly burns and peeling with these 5 sunscreen myths you should stop believing right now!

1. “If I layer SPF 50 twice, I get SPF 100!”

No, it doesn’t work that way! This is a common misconception; a double application of separate skincare and makeup products containing SPF50+ doesn’t immediately grant you a level of SPF100++ in sun protection.Sunscreen ingredients don’t mix together to increase the SPF level inskincare and makeup products. So, when you use several skincare and makeup products containing SPF50+, you only get the highest level of sun protection available — in this case, it’s SPF50+ and not SPF 100++!

2. “I can skip SPF-infused skincare and makeup products when it’s snowing and overcast outside.”

Even if you’re stepping out into frigid temperatures, you still need to apply SPF-infused skincare and makeup products. This is because snow and clouds still don’t block harmful UVA and UVB rays from damaging your precious skin. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, clouds filter less than 25% of the UV rays that penetrate your skin to cause cancer. The bottom line? Beyond summer, the sun can be strong enough to burn in any season. So slip, slop, slap that sunscreen on every day, regardless of the weather!

3. “I have darker skin, so I don’t need to worry about harmful sun damage.”

Harmful sun damage can happen to anyone, regardless of your melanin levels or ethnicity. Uninformed sunscreen myths like this leave our darker-skinned friends to assume that they’re naturally protected from the damaging UVA and UVB rays. And because they tend to comfortably slide into this mindset, they’re more commonly diagnosed with advanced and potentially fatal skin cancer that is found at a later stage. Furthermore, you could also inherit genes that make you more susceptible to such cancers, so your skin colour doesn’t matter in the end. Always be active in reducing your risks of skin cancer by wearing sunscreen daily!

4. “Wearing sun-protecting skincare and makeup products will reduce my daily dose of essential Vitamin D.”

This is a more common misconception than you think. In fact, a liberal amount of SPF-infused skincare and makeup products doesn’t prevent the skin from producing Vitamin D. You need less time in the sun to produce adequate levels of Vitamin D than you realise, depending on latitude and season — just 15 minutes or so is more than enough! Any more will result in harmful chemical toxicity.  If you are unable to get those 15 minutes in, some natural and organic foods contain Vitamin D such as cheese and fortified milk. Many people have enough incidental sun exposure in their day-to-day lives that extra unprotected sun exposure is not needed — wearing fully vegan, organic and natural mineral blockers, however, is still very much needed!

5. “Sun-protecting skincare and makeup products contain toxic, harmful chemicals that make wearing it more dangerous than not.”

While some chemicals are less harmful than others, it is still better to be safe than sorry! Traditional, non-organic and natural (“chemical”) SPF-infused skincare and makeup products once dominated the suncare market because they were lighter, smoother and absorbed easily into the skin. However, all that has changed with the next generation of mineral (“physical”), organic and natural sunscreens that reflects, rather than absorbs harmful UVA and UVB rays. We do suggest an SPF-infused, fully vegan, organic and natural mineral blockers such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as opposed to harmful chemicals.
